Abstract: The properties of amides are determinants of the structure and characteristics of a wide range of molecules and particularly those of peptides and proteins. Universally, amides and amide linkages are characterised by a nitrogen that is largely Sp² hybridised and in which the lone pair resides in a 2pz orbital. As a consequence thereis a strong interaction between the amide nitrogen and the carbonyl.
