Abstract |
Stimulated and informed by Western gender and women's studies theory, gender history has become an increasingly popular and developed field in pan-Chinese scholarly circles over the past twenty years. As a relatively new area of inquiry, it was inevitable that some developed approaches did not always fit well with the details of Chinese history. Many situations specific to Chinese tradition are not always well addressed and present particular difficulties. The papers in Zhongguoshi xinlun: Xingbieshi fence 中國史新論:性別史分冊, however, do offer new and carefully thought out perspectives and provide readers with examples of fine critical analysis on Chinese gender history from the pre-Qin to the Republican period, and through the perspectives of archaeology, literature, fine art, law, religion, oral history, and social history. The topics cover some of most important features of women's lives during this long era, and each paper sheds light on the historiographical problematic of doing Chinese gender history, based on the use of primary historical sources.
