Abstract
Our knowledge of the archaeology of the Achaemenid period in south-west Iran has been dominated by research undertaken at the royal capitals at Susa, in lowland Khuzestan, and at Pasargadae and Persepolis, in highland Fars. However, these sites are in excess of 500 km apart and are each situated in distinctive environments, and we know little about the area that lies in between.
