Abstract: 'Questions of Gender in Byzantine Society' applies the lens of gender to the study of Byzantine history, from the fourth to fifteenth centuries. Drawing on a wide range of literary evidence, this collection of essays brings together the findings of nine established and emerging scholars in the field. It is unique in drawing equally upon Greek and Latin sources for the period in question, thus bridging the traditional divide between eastern Byzantium and its western territories. Secular and religious sources are studied in tandem in order to produce a fuller picture of how the social indicators of gender functioned in Byzantine society.
