Abstract: Mortar sands were collected across a large area of northern New South Wales, Australia and analysed to assess their suitability for masonry construction. Grading curves of 50 sands collected are presented and compared with requirements for building sands and mortars. Results for mortar and flexural bond strength tests developed using 19 of the sands are presented and compared with international standard requirements. As well, the current extent of sand extraction within the study area is outlined. Environmental impacts of these processes are considered and opportunities for recycling and use of alternative waste materials are also discussed briefly.
