Abstract: The Politics of Indigeneity in Australia is examined from a number of perspectives, such as:* settler nationalism;* sub-state nationalism; and* postcolonialism. This analysis is compared with the treatment of Australian Indigeneity as nomadism in Chatwin's novel Songlines. Some problems of Chatwin's treatment of the topic are identified. Beyond these cultural and historical interpretations that have dismayed some critics, it is argued that Chatwin's literary imagination raises some important questions.
