Abstract: Broussais, François-Joseph-Victor: (b. St Malo, France, 17 December 1772; d. Paris, France, 18 November 1838), medical theory, therapeutics. Broussais was born in St Malo, on the Brittany coast, and spent his early years in the nearby village of Pleurtuit. His family had practiced the healing arts for several generations - his father as a surgeon, one of his grandfathers as a pharmacist, and one of his great-grandfathers as a physician. Broussais seems to have enjoyed a close relationship with his father, sharing not only the latter's interest in medicine but also his Voltaire an and anticlerical attitudes, and his strong support for the ideals of the French Revolution.
