Abstract: Many years ago in a perceptive article in 'Biblionews', John Earnshaw put forward arguments to prove that the book published in 1842 by James Tegg, a Sydney publisher and bookseller, was written by John Lang the Australian born novelist and lawyer (NOT John Dunmore Lang). It was entitled 'The Legends of Australia', and included the complete story 'John Frederick Howard' and portion of a second tale. John Lang thus became known as Australia's first native born novelist. Further evidence by Spencer Routh in Queensland later confirmed that Earnshaw was correct in attributing his book to Lang. I have recently been working on, and indexing, John Lang's newspaper called the 'Mofussilite' which he published and edited in India over many years from 1845 until his death in India in 1864, with some gaps when he lived in London in the 1850s. In the 'Mofussilite' for 1861 I came across a novel by Lang called Raymond published as a serial and in the introduction Lang wrote to this work, he commented that twenty years before he had published this novel in 'Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine'. A careful search through 'Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine' for 1841 soon uncovered this novel which is identical in text to that printed in the 'Mofussilite'. Thus this makes it a John Lang novel preceding the 'Legends of Australia' which was published a year later in Sydney in 1842, after Lang had returned to Australia.
