This chapter examines the application of International Instruments that impose environmental requirements on RAN operations. The chapter also discusses the concept of Sovereign Immunity with respect to these Instruments. The following International Instruments are discussed:• United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.• International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) 1973/78.• United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 1994.• Montreal Protocol 1989. Of these instruments, by far the most significant to naval ship design and operations is MARPOL. However, issues arising from each of these instruments will be considered.en
