HERDC Category Description: B1 Chapter in a Scholarly Book
English Abstract: One, if not the leading problem in studies of mathematicians' work is establishing the relationship between the intimate details of proving theorems and the larger structures of mathematical practice. By returning to the temporal experience of theorem proving, this paper illustrates the connections between the continual pursuit of 'focal distance' (the attempt to discover proof-specific proof-relevant gestalts of detail) and the praxeological coherence of provers' work.
