It consists of a main building and a service building on the northern side. The main building has three walls still partially standing around a central room, made of concrete supported on granite stone foundations. The main building has three main rooms, but probably also had an upper storey. The chimney is located in the central room. The remains of a balustrade lines a verandah on the southern side overlooking the road and providing views to the south. The service building had two rooms, the easterly one having a stove and wash stand. This structure is next to the current Cam Tu Hotel, a small tourist hotel, and has been cleared except for the granite stone foundation. Plan C- 65 CR HS2, Dupuy, Lot 124 Fife 2009 Appendices A124 CR HS3, Dr Haslé, Lot 125. This villa was located behind the Dupuy villa, but had been completely destroyed. Only a crater with some fragments of wall remained. Fife 2009 Appendices A125 CR HS4, Biras, Lot 127, This site consisted of a main villa and secondary service building. It was located north of the bomb crater and was heavily overgrown so that only estimates of the main dimensions were possible. Walls were of concrete, no roofing tiles were identified. Plan C- 66 CR HS4, Biras, Lot 127 Fife 2009 Appendices A126 CR HS5, Mme Rome, Lot 120-121 This site was one of the most impressive structures noted in the Central Region. It was constructed on a relatively large levelled block that suggested an extensive garden. The villa was built of granite stone, about 430mm thick for external walls, which were largely intact except for part of the western wall. A balcony was located on the southern side, outside a large room with steps leading up to a wide entrance. Accommodation was provided in a wing on the eastern side with internal bathroom, as well as two small rooms on the northern side. A service building with attached garage was located about 15 metres north-east of the main house adjacent to the road access to the site. Type 5 roofing tiles were noted. Plan C- 67 CR HS5, Mme Rome, Lot 120-121 Fife 2009 Appendices A127 CR HS6, Vidale, Lot 119. This site was located on a terrace above a road with a large bomb crater obstructing it. Just to the west of the concrete slab that marked the main part of the villa was a 3 metre deep shaft with a tunnel leading off to the west. Although there were no walls extant on the main floor area of the villa site, there was a raised concrete platform on the northern end with some remaining concrete wall still standing and evidence of a bathroom and toilet. A stove was at ground level to the west of this on an indistinct floor slab. Type 2 roofing tiles were scattered across the site. Plan C- 68 CR HS6, Vidale, Lot 119. Fife 2009 Appendices A128 CR HS7, Strele, Lot 40. This site consisted of stone foundations about 450mm thick standing to about 1 metre above ground level, and 2 stone pillars to the same height within the main walls. A service building of stone with 3 rooms including a kitchen was located within 10 metres to the north-east of the main structure. The ruin was readily accessible; however no roofing tiles were located. A small stoneware jar was found to the east of the main structure. Plan C- 69 CR HS7, Strele, Lot 40. Only the foundations and lower parts of the walls to about 1 metre high, and internal floor pillars, remain of the main building. In the northeast corner of the main building an internal toilet was positioned on a concrete floor. No roofing tiles associated with main structure. The service building had a single room with a stove at the eastern end. Type 2 roofing tiles associated with service building. Plan C- 71 CR HS9, Torel, Lot 36, 37 Fife 2009 Appendices A131 CR HS10, Mouchard, Lot 113. This substantial, stone, two-storey building is located below the access road in the eastern part of the zone. It was distinctive for its buttressed walls, open water feature on the southern corner and a large arched entry onto an enclosed verandah on the eastern side. It had an internal kitchen in the rear western corner, and upstairs bathrooms. The service building on the western side of the house had 2 rooms with a small kitchen and toilet on the southern end. Type 2 roofing tiles were noted. Plan C- 72 CR HS10, Mouchard, Lot 113 Figure C- 74 CR HS10, Mouchard, Lot 113, eastern wall Fife 2009 Appendices A132 CR HS11, Decoutourier, Lot 134. This lot is located on the southern side and about 5 metres below the main access road and on the edge of a further drop to the south. The structure may have been a two- storey villa with large entry porch; there are some external walls still standing to 3 metres high and concrete rubble on the floors probably from collapsed floor above. Heavily overgrown so that distances estimated. Entrance probably from the west; there are two pillars, 2.5 metres apart, about 7 metres west of the main building, possibly an entrance gate. Roofing tiles on site Type 4, 14, 15. No service building. Plan C- 73 CR HS11, Decoutourier, Lot 134. This structure of brick and concrete on a granite foundation is located about 20 metres above the main access road. It is substantially intact except for the roof. It is a typical Vietnamese Buddhist temple layout with access through 5 arched doorways onto a covered verandah, and three doors into the main room. Three alters are positioned along the rear wall. Type 2 roofing tiles are scattered around the floor. Within the main building two fragments of kitchen ceramic were located. One of these included the trademark ‘HB.CM – France (see Figure 7-4). Another piece of red, very fine grained, glassy material (40x15x21) was also located (see Figure 7-5). To the north of the temple building was a scatter of Type 14 (local) roofing tiles. During the fieldwork a story was recorded about this site with Bà Bờ in Cầu Hai village (p. 148, Appendix B-4). Plan C- 80 WR HS2, Buddhist Temple, Lot 146. Fife 2009 Appendices A145 WR HS3, No Name, no lot number. This substantial structure is located on a building platform on the ridge with views to the north-west. The main structure is substantially intact, no roof and a portion of a rear wall collapsed. It appears to have an extensive garden area between the house and a very steep slope on the north-western side. The main house has an internal kitchen and possible accommodation in the roof cavity. There is a pile of rubble behind the house that may have been a service building, but has been completely destroyed. Type 6 roofing tiles. Plan C- 81 WR HS3, No Name, no lot number. Fife 2009 Appendices A146 WR HS4, Lot 76. Located on a spur below the north-west ridge, this site has a prime location with substantial views to the north-west and south. The concrete structure is fairly symmetrical, appears to have four main bedrooms with a large common central living area, each with access to its own bathroom and toilet, however the two rooms on the south-west have internal access to bathrooms, while at the other end access is external. The southern wall had many bullet holes on the outside. About 6 metres north of the house two poles and a scatter of roofing tiles suggests another structure in the garden area. No internal kitchen facilities noted. Plan C- 82 WR HS4, Lot 76. Figure C- 83 WR HS4, Lot 76. Note damage in walls from gunfire. Fife 2009 Appendices A147 Figure C- 84 WR HS4, Lot 76. Plan C- 92 SR HS9, Dr Mathieu, Lot 225 Fife 2009 Appendices A162 SR HS11, Thua Thien Residence, no lot number This site is located at the end of a ridge above SR HS8, and a new walking trail links the two. The main structure has two parts. The front, northern part has stone walls 400mm thick, has a basement/cellar, and a post extending from the top of the wall suggests it had a timber frame upper storey. The main entry is in the north-eastern corner off a verandah, although this aspect overlooks a steep slope and the road access is on the southern side of the site. The rear part seems to have been added to the main structure, walls slightly thinner (330mm), a sloping roof and no upper storey. A large garden area is on the western side of the main structure. Type 4 roofing tiles were present. The second structure seems to be a garage, but with massive stone walls 420mm thick and an arched door. There are external steps leading to an upper level which appears to be a single room with a corridor on the southern side. A service building on the western side is built across another arched window in the rear of the garage. The service building has three rooms, the eastern one a kitchen. This site, on the end of a ridge, had been fortified during the war by trenching along the eastern side with a bunker on the northern end which had utilized building materials from the main structure. More trenching leads to the south from the second building. A stone barrier had been placed in the entrance to the garage and a steel ammunition box was on the floor. An opening through the western wall of the main building into the cellar was probably part of the fortification Plan C- 93 SR HS11, Thua Thien Residence.
