DATA & FILE OVERVIEW 1. File List: 1837-54_ConvictPopulation_DP170103642_v2.xls Excel file containing the primary dataset 2. Relationship between files, if important: This dataset was compiled by Dr Richard Tuffin as part of ARC project Landscapes of Production and Punishment (DP170103642). It provides a statistical breakdown of the convict places of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) during the period 1837-54. During this time the convict system underwent a fundamental change as the assignment system was discontinued and the probation implemented in its place. This dataset was compiled to better understand the impact of probation's introduction and provides the backend of GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping that visualises the multiplication of convict places across the colony during this period. This is an active dataset and may be updated as new data is sourced. 3. Additional related data collected that was not included in the current data package: Part of a suite of DP170103642 datasets made available through: https://rune.une.edu.au/web/cris/rp/rp59388 4. Are there multiple versions of the dataset? Yes A. If yes, name of file(s) that was updated: 1837-54_ConvictPopulation_DP170103642_v2.xls i. Why was the file updated? DOI and reference updated ii. When was the file updated? 2020-04-24 METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION 1. Description of methods used for collection/generation of data: Statistical data generated during the course of historical research for R Tuffin's thesis and project DP170103642.
