John Stinson was born in Marrickville, NSW, was educated at De La Salle Marrickville and St Stanislaus College, Bathurst. He was a Franciscan friar from 1955 to 1972. He then studied English and Music at the University of Queensland, medieval English literature at the Australian National University and James Cook University and musicology at the City University in New York. He taught musicology at ANU, the University of Canberra and La Trobe University from 1974 to 1999 and the Australian Catholic University 2001-2002. With John Curro, he founded the Queensland Youth Orchestra in 1967. with Elizabeth Morgan, he founded the Australian String Teachers’ Association (AUSTA) in 1975; with Rodney Hall, he was co-director of the Australian Summer School of Early Music, 1978-1989. From 1983 to 1990 he was co-director of The Fourteenth-Century Music Project with John Griffiths.With Brian Parish he developed the program Scribe with which he encoded a complete annual cycle of Dominican chant, complete Hildegard, Don Paolo Tenorista, Francesco Landini and many other Trecento works. Many of these are included in The Medieval Music Database, available on the Internet since 1994.He is married to Ruth Wilkinson. In 2010 was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his services to the study of medieval music. He is Emeritus Scholar at La Trobe University.
