Abstract

Abstract

Parnell’s book deals with an important topic that has not yet been systematically examined in this way: the careers and networks of Byzantine officers in the 6th century AD. The author has already completed a doctorate on a similar subject and, over recent years, has published a series of essays (including a useful prosopography), some of which have been reused in the present book. This corresponds to the Anglo-Saxon tradition of defining and delineating a chosen “research field”; however, the book does not therefore offer entirely new material throughout. The author divides the topic into six chapters.
