Abstract
During the 1950's John Meredith pioneered the use of the magnetic tape recorder to collect 1200 items of traditional songs, music, recitations and stories. In the period September 1981 to July 1994 he recorded another 6,800 items making a total of approximately 8,000 items from some 800 informants. The work during this latter period was funded by The National Library of Australia, where the collection of master tapes is housed in the Oral History Department. ... John Stanley Raymond Meredith of Thirlmere received the Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) in the New Year Honours 1986, New South Wales, for 'services to Australian Folklore and Music'. In the Queen's Birthday Honours, 1992, he was awarded membership in the Order of Australia (AM), General Division, for 'service to the Arts, particularly in the collection and preservation of Australian Folklore'.
