Abstract

Legendary diviner whose ORACLES Herodotus refers to but does not quote. Musaeus' name ("of the Muses") suggests that he is an invented character. According to Herodotus, the oracles of Musaeus the Athenian (Eur. Rhesus 945) came true during the PERSIAN WARS; Musaeus was particularly associated with ATHENS, and had a tomb (but not cult) there (Paus. 1.25.8; Anth. Pal. 7.615).
