Abstract |
<p>The article examines the case of George Bateson, convicted in Melbourne of sodomy in 1861. It explores the attitudes towards homosexuality during this period, highlighting the stigma and legal repercussions faced by individuals accused of such offenses. Bateson's extensive correspondence from prison reveals his struggle to maintain his innocence and the psychological turmoil stemming from his conviction. The article also discusses the broader implications of his case for understanding male sexuality and identity in a rapidly changing society.</p>
