Abstract

The Kindness Project by Deborah Abela (2024) is a verse novel that appeals to students in Years Four to Six. The novel is a poetic narrative about four children who transcend their differences to courageously change the world through kindness. A review of the novel can be found on page 43 of the October 2025 (Volume 30, Number 3) issue of Practical Literacy. The Kindness Project is a high-quality novel that can be used as a mentor text in English curriculum plans (Parkin and Harper, 2025). The novel deals with themes of negotiating friendships and enmities, facing change, handling complex family circumstances, and perhaps worst of all, being made to do group work in class! It's a very relatable text for upper primary audiences that implies positive values such as self-belief and resilience.
