Abstract
‘Papered’ is a work of operatic biofiction based on the life of Australian artist and designer Florence Broadhurst (1899-1977). The opera responds to and explores the layered descriptions and presences that Broadhurst exhibited during their fractured global life. This work in particular focuses on 1960s Sydney, where Broadhurst transformed into the wallpaper designer and entrepreneur they are most famous as. The research employs a queer methodological practice to analyse and present the layered constructs of gender across Broadhurst's life and reveal new understandings about the way prominent Australian women characterised themselves in different parts of the world in the 20th century.
