Abstract |
This book will introduce you to a range of factors that are important in learning and teaching. The content is generic, which means it applies to all teachers and all learners (rather than, for example, just to maths teachers or primary students). One implication of this is that all of you will apply the content in different ways in your 9individual teaching situations. Strategies to promote effective learning are examined for both their practical relevance and theoretical purpose. An emphasis throughout the book is on thinking about ways to apply and practise these various strategies, which will enable you in turn to help your future students be active learners. So although the content is about how people learn, this book is not an educational psychology text in the usual sense of the description. We make no pretence of 'coverage of the field'. Rather, we concentrate on raising questions, examining issues and encouraging you to think about what you as teachers can do to help your students to learn. The emphasis is on applying theory rather than on learning about theories.
